Chapter Five
Mary Aliceâs perfume hung in the air and Will had to force herself to turn and walk away. She was completely captivated by Mary Alice and that was very, very dangerous. She had not been aware of anyone else in the room and had been completely transfixed by how comfortable and outspoken she was. Most women, especially those in a small town like Waco, demurred to a man and never dared to say anything out of place. Mary Alice was definitely unlike any women she had ever met.
For the next two weeks, Will worked nonstop getting the bank ready. There was a myriad of details that filled her days and well into the evening, but Mary Alice was never very far from her mind. Will had seen Mary Alice several times, whether it was walking across the street to the café, or simply sitting outside on her porch, enjoying the cool afternoon, her mending in her lap. Twice Will was able to sit behind her in the small church. While others around her obeyed the preacherâs command to stand and close their eyes in prayer, Will had an unobstructed view of Mary Aliceâs long neck, straight back, and thin waist tapering to her hips. She kept her hands in her pocket so as not to reach out and pull Mary Alice to her. She didnât chastise herself for such sinful thoughts in the house of the Lord.
Earlier this morning, Will was hanging up the new sign when Mary Alice walked by. When she greeted her, Will promptly struck her thumb with the hammer and almost fell off the ladder. She had to bite back a curse lest she be embarrassed.
It was five days before the bank opening when Will finally got up the courage to walk through Mary Aliceâs front door. The bell overhead rang when she opened the door and again when she closed it.
âJust a moment,â Mary Alice called from another room.
Will glanced around the room. There were spools of yarn stacked neatly on a shelf, bobs of thread were lined up neatly on another shelf, and bolts of cloth stacked high on a table. Two handmade shapes of a womanâs torso were on sticks as if standing sentry over the room. On one was a dress with pins in the hem, the other held cloth that Will assumed would eventually be another dress. Her hand shook as she removed her hat. Will had debated coming here and had talked herself out of it many, many, times. Before she had a chance to come to her senses and leave, Mary Alice stepped in the room.
âGood afternoon, Mr. Dixon.â
Willâs mouth went dry. The sound of Mary Aliceâs voice and the way she said her name made Willâs insides quiver.
âGood afternoon, Miss Walker. I hope Iâm not disturbing you.â
âNo not at all. I was just making some tea. Would you like to join me?â
Will hesitated, fighting the urge to say yes. Sheâd already spent way too much time with Mary Alice, and what she was doing here now was downright foolish, if not dangerous.
